Plans call to demolish and reconstruct two wings of Building 102 at its Animal Center campus in Dickerson, MD. Specifically, NIH would demolish Wings A and B, which currently house obsolete dog kennels, and then construct new two-level wings with biomedical research space, administrative offices, and general support space. The existing building is one level, and the new wings would be two levels, encompassing a total indoor space of approximately 46,000 gross square feet. The ground level would house modern biomedical research space and the second level would accommodate mostly mechanical space, with a small area dedicated for police training, to be accessed through a separate lobby area and elevator. Other site work would include new landscaping, stormwater management area, lighting, on-site furnishings, and a new loading dock area, and the existing on-site parking and circulation would remain unchanged. As of February 13, 2026, the project has begun. The completion timeline is scheduled for November 2028. However, the firm timelines have not been identified.
