"We want to make sure we're meeting travelers' needs," explained Rick Neel, the airport's aviation properties and development manager. "From the surveys we released, we gathered that passengers really want to feel like they're landing in San Antonio." San Antonio International Airport is adding 22 new restaurants and retail locations in both Terminals A and B, including local restaurants Tre Pizzeria, Bakery Lorraine, Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery and Pharm Table. "San Antonio has a rich culinary story, and that's something we want to bring to the airport," Neel said. "That's been the biggest push for us." The airport estimates that the new dining options and retail stores will generate a projected $71.4 million in revenue for the city and an estimated $516 million in gross sales over the 10-year contract. Neel provided a rundown on the projected opening dates for the incoming airport locations. 2025 openings Ahead of the holidays, one of the busiest travel times of the year, the airport is aiming to open Tre Pizzeria, along with Univision and 210 Exchange retail stores in Terminal A. Tre Pizzeria debuted in Boerne last year as a casual offshoot of chef Jason Dady's Tre Trattoria, his upscale Italian restaurant at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The pizzeria's new airport location will feature a similar menu as the Boerne location, including pasta and flatbread pizzas. Early 2026 openings In January, the new Alamo Tequila Bar is set to open, along with an additional grab-n-go kiosk, in Terminal A. In February, Pharm Table is scheduled to open in Terminal A. The health-conscious and globally inspired restaurant first opened in downtown San Antonio in 2015 before moving to Southtown in 2020. Later in the spring, around March or April, the airport plans to open local spots Bakery Lorraine and Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery, as well as Military City USA, a new retail store, in Terminal B. Bakery Lorraine, known for its homemade French pastries, has been a San Antonio staple for more than a decade and now has six locations across San Antonio, Boerne and Austin. Co-founder Ann Ng was a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Pastry Chef category in 2023. Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery debuted on the ground floor of the historic Pearl brewhouse in 2015. The popular Southern comfort restaurant from chef Jeff Balfour won a Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2024 in recognition of its Texan cuisine. Terminal A will be adding Panda Express and Prickly Pear Provisions, a news and gift stand that will feature local and regional Hill Country gifts, including localized art, salsas and jams. Summer 2026 openings and beyond Before July 4, the airport aims to open 2M Smokehouse, The Tasting Room wine bar and Popeyes in Terminal B. 2M Smokehouse opened on San Antonio's Southeast Side in 2016, and co-founder Esaul Ramos Jr. has twice been a semifinalist for James Beard's Best Chef: Texas. The Tasting Room will feature Hill Country selections from Fredericksburg's Becker Vineyards and other area winemakers. In Terminal A, Freight Fried Chicken is expected to open in June. Owner Lattoia Massey, otherwise known as chef Nicola Blaque, opened the fried chicken joint in the Pearl last year. Massey, who also owns the Jerk Shack in town, has earned a slew of accolades and has been a James Beard Award semifinalist. Also in Terminal A, chef Johnny Hernandez's La Gloria will get a refresh, and La Fruteria will become Southtown Market, a grab-n-go market with alcohol. Hernandez is the creative mind behind several culinary endeavors in the Alamo City, including Botanero Lounge and Casa Hernan. The founder of La Gloria Group has plans to launch a food hall in Southtown to house all of his brands under one roof. Hernandez also is offering a blend of his restaurants under a new concept for the airport, Chef Johnny Mercado. It will be in the airport's incoming ground-load facility, which will include new Terminal A gates and added concession space. Chef Johnny Mercado is an estimated $1.2 million project, according to a filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The new ground-load facility, expected to open next fall, also will feature Confluence Market, a grab-n-go concept inspired by the River Walk and the city's cultural heritage. Most of the new local concepts opening in the airport will be replacing national brands, including Auntie Anne's, Vino Volo, Charleys Cheesesteaks and Sbarro's Pizza. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ https://www.star-telegram.com/news/state/texas/article308526345.html City leaders are looking to ease the parking crunch at San Antonio International Airport - while also making accommodations for flying taxis. The City Council on Thursday awarded $110 million design-build contract for the construction of a six-story parking garage, the airport's third. It'll add more than 2,000 parking spaces and is slated to open in fall 2027. The first floor of the structure, known as the Ground Transportation Center, will include lanes for VIA Metropolitan Transit buses, hotel shuttles, taxis and ride-hailing services. The aim is to clear the frequently clogged pickup and drop-off lanes outside Terminals A and B. Now, about those flying taxis: Aviation companies are still years away from perfecting the aircraft, known as electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles. But Airport Director Jesus Saenz said San Antonio will be equipped to welcome them when the time comes. "The easiest way I have explained it is 'The Jetsons,'" he said, referring to the 1960s animated sitcom set in the future and featuring the Jetson family and flying cars. "That is really where things are moving toward." The electric aircraft can lift off like helicopters and fly at speeds of up to 200 mph, but they're far quieter than fuel-powered helicopters and small airplanes. Port San Antonio is also looking to welcome air taxis and other similarly innovative aircraft to the city. The Port is building a landing area for the aircraft to land and have advocated for the new technology. City Council awarded the contract to Kansas City-based J.E. Dunn Construction, San Antonio's Marmon Mok Architecture and the Houston-based PGAL design firm. The overall cost of the project is expected to approach $125 million. All three firms have experience working on San Antonio projects. J.E. Dunn and Marmon Mok built a 900-space parking garage at University Health System's Women's and Children's Hospital. Saenz said the garage and new surface lots surrounding it will add up to 2,500 parking spaces at the airport. Construction will begin in the next two months. Ticketless trouble The airport will likely use Nashville-based Metropolis Technologies to collect payment at the Ground Transportation Center. Metropolis replaced the airport's ticket-based parking system in November. It uses artificial intelligence to recognize license plates and link them with vehicle owners using government data. Drivers create a profile with Metropolis using the company's app or website, providing their license plate and credit card numbers. The company charges them for the time they spend in the parking area after its cameras spot their vehicles leaving. The company has been slammed with multiple class-action lawsuits and complaints to the Better Business Bureau, with drivers alleging they were charged high late fees on top of parking charges they didn't know they had accrued. In March, the San Antonio Express-News found that 41 veterans were charged for parking through the ticketless payment system even though vets have free parking at the airport for up to 30 days at a time. Saenz said Thursday the number of complaints has dropped, and that the company has refunded the veterans' payments. Scarce parking spaces The Ground Transportation Center will sit outside the loop that drivers circle when dropping off or picking up travelers at the airport. Open parking spaces have become scarce, especially as demand for air travel has come roaring back after the pandemic. The airport's two existing garages often hit their maximum capacity, forcing people out to surface lots from which they have to take shuttles to get to the airport. The airport's two parking garages, two surface lots and five small overflow lots account for about 10,000 parking spaces. The new garage will be the second largest on site, behind the 4,000-space long-term parking garage. The project is one of the priciest in the airport's 20-year, $2.5 billion expansion plan, behind a $1.7 billion terminal that has been under construction since December. Hensel Phelps, general contractor for the new terminal, was set to work on the parking garage under its city contract. But airport officials pulled the project from the to-do list about a year ago in hopes that another contractor could build the facility sooner. The garage was initially slated to open in 2028 with just 500 spots. City Council on Thursday also approved a $90 million contract with Coppell, Texas-based Austin Bridge and Road for airfield improvements, including drainage work and pavement rehabilitation on one of the three runways. The runway supports most of the air travel flying in and out of San Antonio, but Saenz said the revamp isn't expected to slow down travel. Work on the runway will begin in January and is expected to wrap up within eight months.
