Site work and new construction of a detention facility in Wharton, Texas. Design plans call for the construction of a 220-bed detention facility.
As of October 15, 2025, this project is in hold. The cost estimates for a new 220-bed jail ranged between $40-50 million, which would require a tax increase of about 5.5 cents per $100 of property value over 20 years, while adding three new housing sections to the current jail would cost an estimated $25-30 million with a smaller tax increase of approximately 3.5 cents per $100. A new jail, while not coming anytime soon, is being looked into by county leaders. The Wharton County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to approve a $50,000 contract with architects Brinkley Sargent Wiginton for a study to determine whether it is more cost effective to add on to the current county jail or build a new one.
