Houston High School — GMSD's lone high school, opened in 1989 at 9755 Wolf River Boulevard — is the subject of what city leaders are calling a once-in-a-generation investment. The Germantown Board of Education engaged Fleming Architects to develop conceptual plans addressing both academic and athletic needs, presenting two renovation scenarios to the board Shelbychamberalliance that would significantly transform the school's dated appearance and facilities. Project Scope Fleming's full recommendations carry a price tag of $133 million to $145 million, though the final scope will depend on community input and public meetings. Shelbychamberalliance GMSD has organized the master plan into four phasing "buckets" — fine arts, academic spaces, athletics, and operations — each shaped by its own subcommittee of teachers, students, parents, and community members. Athletic plans include renovated varsity gym spaces for basketball and wrestling, additional practice fields, a new track, upgraded locker rooms, expansions to the tennis complex, a new football stadium, and a new indoor practice facility. Academic improvements include new classroom wings and a 300-seat lecture hall, while fine arts plans call for a new performing arts center and fine arts wing. Gmsdk12 The district has also flagged smaller near-term improvements — LED lighting upgrades, ceiling tile replacements, bathroom renovations — to be handled through its regular capital budget while the phased master plan takes shape. No construction manager or contractor has been selected. Fleming Architects Shelbychamberalliance, based in the Memphis area, has been the architect of record driving the master planning and conceptual design work since at least 2022, and would be the natural candidate to carry through to full design services — but no formal design or construction contracts have been awarded. The project remains in a planning and funding-resolution phase. What to Watch The next concrete milestone is the resolution of the funding strategy. GMSD is currently refining the plan and breaking it into phases to align with funding capabilities Gmsdk12, meaning the scope that actually moves to design and construction will likely be smaller than the full master plan vision, at least initially. Once a phase and funding package are locked in, architect contract expansion and a CM/contractor procurement would follow. Until the city and school board close the funding gap — through debt restructuring, alternative revenue, or phased scope reduction — no construction timeline can be established. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
