https://kfoxtv.com/news/local/el-paso-residents-voice-concerns-over-proposed-i-10-expansion-project EL PASO, Texas - (KFOX14/CBS4) — A proposed project to expand Interstate 10 in downtown El Paso, known as Downtown 10, is drawing concerns from local residents and business owners. The project, which would stretch from Executive Center to Copia Street, spans nearly six miles and is part of a larger I-10 corridor study by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Greg Davis, President of McCall Center and representative of the Eastside-Central Coalition, said a group of El Pasoans is opposing the project. "The El Paso Neighborhoods Coalition... commissioned a transportation consultant to analyze and report the proposal of the ITIN expansion. The study, named stopping the ITIN widening and finding a better path to the future for El Paso," David said. "I've heard from a lot of very concerned business owners and that's all, not to mention that TXDOT will actually directly take some businesses north of I-10 to expand the footprint of the current highway location," said Canales. According to TxDOT's draft environmental study, the project could affect four multi-family buildings and 11 non-residential buildings. Read the study below: Click here to view the PDF file. Five options have been proposed, including a no-build option, with plans to expand the interstate from three to five lanes in both directions, to four to six lanes, alongside new frontage roads and other improvements. Josiah Heyman, a professor from the University of Texas at El Paso, expressed concerns about the impact on nearby neighborhoods. "There's a lot of areas that are near I-10 that are gonna be impacted by this construction. And I worry about whether they'll recover," said Heyman. A public hearing is scheduled for September 16 at the Convention Center, where residents can ask questions and learn more about the proposed project.
