As of September 15, 2025, an engineer has been selected. This project is in the design phase, however, it is not currently funded for construction nor right of way. Engineer information and a firm timeline for construction has not been determined. The purpose and need of this study was to increase capacity of SR 22 (Wewa Highway) from US 98B to Star Avenue. Improvements to the corridor will assist in the movement of freight and goods, minimize travel times for the general public, and maintain Level of Service (LOS) standards through the Design Year (2040). This project is needed in order to increase roadway capacity for people and goods traveling on Wewa Highway through Bay County and the City of Callaway and the City of Springfield. Preferred “Build’ Concept: The Build scenario proposed to widen the roadway to a four-lane urban section, with curb and gutter, and a raised landscaped median. Bike lanes and sidewalks are also provided in each direction to accommodate the pedestrian users along the corridor. The four-lane section will include exclusive left-turn lanes located at major intersections and driveway connections, consistent with access class 5 (1/4 mile spacing for full opening and 1/8 mile spacing for directional openings) and a single-lane left-turn flyover from southbound Tyndall Parkway to eastbound Wewa Highway. Transportation System Management (TSM) Alternative strategies were considered and included in the analysis, but were not found to be prudent, viable solution. The analysis found that capacity improvements are needed for SR 22 in the future.
