Site work for a water / sewer project in Winnabow, North Carolina. Conceptual plans call for site work for a water / sewer project.
A major pre-Revolutionary port on North Carolina's Cape Fear River, Brunswick was razed by British troops in 1776 and never rebuilt. During the Civil War, Fort Anderson was constructed atop the old village site. The remains of homes, businesses, and other buildings bear witness to the story of Brunswick. Along with artifacts from the Civil War and the imposing mounds of Fort Anderson, this site offers a unique look at two fascinating periods of American history. Erosion and wave damage caused by increased shipping traffic on the Cape Fear River is threatening the site's natural and cultural resources. The Department desires to stabilize additional shoreline lengths to protect the site. Earlier shoreline stabilization projects used a combination of riprap protection, stone mattresses, and wave attenuation devices (Reefmaker Ecosystem). The riprap protection and stone mattresses did not hold up well and should not be considered for this project. The wave attenuation devices have had remarkable impact on stabilizing the shoreline and protecting the site. Approximately 1,980 linear feet of shoreline is protected by existing wave attenuation devices. This project should extend this protection to an additional 550 +/- linear feet of shoreline.
