Kentucky Trails is a major expansion of The Louisville Zoo. The project will be constructed on over seventeen acres of undeveloped zoo property. The site is located between Beargrass Creek, the Kensington Neighborhood, and the Zoo path adjacent to existing features such as Australian Outback, Wild Burger, Snow Leopard and Tiger Taiga. The project consists of several new structures, multiple animal habitats, a man-made creek for kayaking, and a new train ride experience. Proposals cannot be submitted through the portal after 3:00 p.m. EST on October 10th, 2025 The first phase of construction will enable the subsequent phases to come online with minimal disruption to the infrastructure and visitor experience. Phase 1 will include alternates. The base scope of this phase is tree and brush removal, demolition of abandoned fencing, installation of sediment basins and silt fence, and construction fencing. Alternate 1 is to include demo and rework of existing sewer lines. Alternate 2 is to include construction of new utility trunks and the man-made creek and wetlands along with piping and infrastructure required for LSS in a future phase. Graded surfaces that will be paved in future construction phases will be utilized as pervious surface walking trails at the completion of Phase 1 and throughout construction of subsequent phases. If Alternates 1 and 2 are not done in Phase 1, they will need to be done in Phase 1B, which could precede or overlap Phase 2. The second phase of construction includes the completion of the following components in sequence to be determined in the pre-construction meetings. - KT Plaza, Guest Services Building, Kayak Launch, Train Rails, Station and Maintenance Building - Beaver and Otter Holding Building, LSS System, Sandhill Crane and Habitats - KCC Building, Training Yard, KCC Plaza, Raptor Holding and MOTUS Tower - Predator Holding Building, Critter Corridor and Habitats - Bison and Elk Holding, Habitats, View Shelters, Raised Boardwalk, Rickhouse Pavilion and Plaza
