Renovation of a mixed-use development in Salem, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a medical facility.
The primary purpose of this project is to modify patient bathrooms to prevent water from flowing outside of the shower area and ultimately being tracked outside of the bathroom in Area J of the fourth floor of Building 143 at the Salem VA Medical Center. The engineered solution involves renovating 20 bathrooms by demolishing the entire existing flooring in each bathroom. The current shower area uses a curtain and an accessible threshold/barrier around a sloped shower base to contain water, but water still escapes and lacks proper drainage, creating a hazardous condition. The new solution will remove all existing interior floor tile finishes and shower thresholds, and install a barrier-free tile system that ensures consistent positive drainage from every corner of the bathroom. This will require grinding and leveling the existing concrete slab to enable proper drainage to the existing drain location. All demolished materials and debris will be removed, and surfaces will be prepped to receive new leveling and finishes as described in the drawings.
