The City of Calgary is interested in learning about organizations that are interested in developing and overseeing the implementation of a temporary public space design in a street right-of-way for an upcoming Summer Streets pilot initiative. This project is a pilot, and the RFI is intended to help determine an appropriate scope of work, identify gaps, and assist with establishing pricing for a design consultant. It will also help The City assess if there is sufficient interest and expertise available to proceed with a competition for a short-term contract. The City of Calgary’s Downtown Strategy team is exploring a Summer Street pilot project to help facilitate the temporary pedestrianization of a street on a key commercial and pedestrian corridor in the Greater Downtown. With a consistent influx of new residents, this project will provide increased public space and programming space where its most needed and during the season that people spend the most time outdoors. The Summer Street would pedestrianize a minimum of 1 block of a street, closing the roadway to cars, for a minimum duration of 1 month. The objectives of the pilot are to: •Create a community amenity and destination to increase public space downtown •Increase vibrancy and attract people into the area in a way that supports the local businesses •Test and pilot a new approach to create a plaza or people-oriented space in a road right-of-way •Work through internal barriers to re-occurring or multi-week closures that would make it easier for future projects of this nature •Explore the infrastructure, design, programming and funding required to deliver on a longer-term summer streets program •Increase programming opportunities
