Austin State University are getting a new, four-story, 144-room residential hall, following approval Thursday from the University of Texas System Board of Regents. Known as Lumberjack Crossing, SFA officials say it will be the university's first new residence hall on campus in nearly 15 years. The hall will accommodate up to 336 students, and feature lounge spaces, study areas and staff quarters. The $70 million project will be built on the former site of East College Cafeteria, now a vacant green space, according to local reports. The expansion comes as SFA reported one of its largest enrollments in recent years. In a February news release, SFA said spring headcount increased by seven percent compared to last year, surpassing 10,000 students for the first time in three years. Undergraduate enrollment rose by 9 percent, representing the largest number since spring 2022, while transfer enrollments increased by 15 percent. "From expanded transfer pathways to focused student success initiatives, we are meeting students where they are and providing clear, affordable routes to a degree," Dr. Neal Weaver, SFA president, said in the release. "The momentum we're seeing reflects the trust families and students are placing in this institution." The growth in more students is exactly why more dorm spaces are needed, Dr. Weaver noted in his appeal to the board of regents. "Our freshman class last year grew by 27 percent; we believe we could do that again," he said. "Unfortunately, we just don't have enough beds to house them all." Stephen F. Austin State University, in Nacogdoches in East Texas, officially became part of the University of Texas System in 2024. Joining the UT System has given SFA a boost--more funding, bigger academic resources, and a higher profile across the state--paving the way for growth and projects like the new Lumberjack Crossing residence hall. "I am deeply grateful to the committee members whose leadership guided the development of these plans and to the students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members whose engagement helped shape them," Weaver said Thursday. "Together, we are establishing a bold, future-focused roadmap that will transform this campus and the East Texas region over the next 10 years, expand opportunity for our students, and position SFA for lasting success within The University of Texas System."
