Site work for a power facility in Wesleyville, Ontario. Conceptual plans call for site work for a power facility.
Construction of a new nuclear energy generation at their Wesleyville site (along Lake Ontario waterfront near Port Hope), to meet the rising energy demands in Ontario set to increase by 75 per cent by 2050. This site, which is near transmission, road and railway infrastructure, could host up to 10,000 megawatts (MW) of new nuclear generation, which could power the equivalent of 10 million homes. Project life has been estimated at 95 years, which includes design, construction, operation, and maintenance. TIMELINE: Conceptual planning only is underway. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is working with local communities to determine support as the province seeks to expand this facility. Engagement and development work is underway to determine the feasibility of the project. The Wellesley site is already zoned for new electricity generation. OPG expects to start impact assessment activities in 2025 and 2026 for the site. Construction and operation licences are targeted in the 2030s for operation in the 2040s. *OPG is working with Williams Treaties First Nations and the Municipality of Port Hope to explore the potential for new nuclear power generation at their Wesleyville site. *Conference Board of Canada estimates the project could contribute 235 billion to Ontario's GDP over its 95-year lifespan. *A cost estimate has has to be released stating too premature.
