As of April 2026, an awarded design firm has been announced. A timeline for completed construction documents has not been disclosed. A firm construction schedule has not been established. The project involves renovating and expanding BSL3 suites at the Burnett-Womack building to bring together investigators working on emerging and re-emerging infections, enable access to specialized equipment for high containment research, and create institution-wide core space for recruiting new investigators in infectious disease research. The scope includes reconfiguring approximately 5,000 square feet and renovating portions of the remainder of the ninth floor to create an approximately 10,000-sf BSL3 Containment suite, with improvements expected for environmental systems such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, emergency power, and a new effluent decontamination system. The design team must coordinate with multiple university stakeholders, prepare design concepts with cost analysis, ensure compliance with NC Building Codes, and prepare cost estimates, project schedules, phasing plans, and concept renderings.
