Renovation of an educational facility in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a 23,541-square-foot educational facility.
Stone House was originally built as a chapter house for Sigma Nu, one of several fraternities that lined Arkansas Avenue. When the fraternity left the building in 2000, the building was renamed in honor of its architect, Edward Durell Stone. Stone was a native of Fayetteville, and briefly attended the University of Arkansas-where he joined Sigma Nu -before moving to Boston in 1920 to study architecture. He would go on to be one of the best known American architects in the mid-twentieth century, designing such buildings as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. In the 1950s and 60s, Stone's firm in New York designed several buildings on campus, including the Fine Arts Center and Sigma Nu. Both are definitive examples of the International Style, and are the first modernist buildings at the university. Stone House has been used as a swing space building for 25 years, housing temporary faculty offices, art studios, classrooms, and research laboratories as needed. In that time, minimal investment has been made in building systems, roofing, code upgrades, or finishes. In 2019, the university commissioned a study to evaluate the building's condition and demonstrate how the building could be reconfigured for permanent academic use. The study identified all structural and mechanical deficiencies, and showed how the building could be made ADAcompliant for the first time. Funding this request will allow for restoration of the building to full working condition in accordance with preservation best practices The project is included in the State's 2025-2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of May 29, 2026, this project is in the conceptual phase and is not currently active.
