Kimpel Hall, originally called the Communications Center, was named in 1983 in honor of Ben Drew Kimpel. Kimpel was raised in Fort Smith, and was educated at Harvard University and at UNC Chapel Hill. He was professor of English at the University of Arkansas from 1952 to 1983, and was a widely respected scholar and linguist. The building is currently the most populated classroom building on campus with 29,000 scheduled credit hours per semester. It houses the departments of Communications, Drama, English, Foreign Languages, and Journalism. Kimpel Hall is composed of two wings: a four-story classroom block connected at the elevators to a seven-story office tower. The entire classroom block was renovated in 2018 and a large studio was added for the School of Journalism and Strategic Media. That project eliminated 40 years of deferred maintenance and introduced ADA-accessible restrooms to the building for the first time. In addition, the exterior of the entire building was renovated, including replacement of all windows to increase energy savings. Funding this request would allow the university to complete the total interior renovation of the office tower, which would remove all remaining asbestos, upgrade the tower's mechanical and electrical systems, and create more efficient faculty work areas. The project is included in the State's 2025-2027 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
