The City of Norwalk is requesting proposals from a multidisciplinary design team to create a unified, future-focused wayfinding, identity, and placemaking system for its vibrant urban core. The requirements of this project are outlined in greater detail under Section 2 Scope of Work/Project Specifications. Please include the Project Number and Project Title in the subject line Background Norwalk, Connecticut, a coastal city in Fairfield County, spans approximately 36 square miles and is home to over 90,000 residents of diverse backgrounds. Norwalk has approximately 283 miles of road (excluding major highways) and about 30,000 parcels. Core Program Objectives o Highlight Norwalk's key cultural, civic, and commercial destinations o Celebrate the distinct identities of the four primary business districts: South Norwalk SoNo, Wall Street, West Avenue, and East Norwalk (East Ave) o Create a recognizable, ownable graphic and environmental identity for Norwalk o Support seamless multimodal navigation (vehicular, pedestrian, bicycle, transit, rail) o Integrate inclusive, accessible, and sustainable design practices o Deliver a flexible, phased, and easily updatable system o Provide consistent digital tools (web, mobile app integration, real-time content) o Include guidelines for regulatory signage, temporary event signage, and banners o Incorporate emergency wayfinding and evacuation route information o Provide comprehensive citywide vehicular and pedestrian parking guidance, incorporating Park Norwalk branding and real-time availability where feasible, to direct drivers efficiently to public parking garages and lots and, upon arrival, guide users from those facilities to nearby districts, businesses, and destinations Background Norwalk, Connecticut, a coastal city in Fairfield County, spans approximately 36 square miles and is home to over 90,000 residents of diverse backgrounds. Pedestrian & Trail Wayfinding o Signage for the expanding Norwalk River Valley Trail (NRVT) and regional trail network (Harbor Loop Trail) o Trail signs providing navigation, safety information, and wayfinding for pedestrian, biking, and multi-use trails within urban neighborhoods o Historical Significance and History Trail Signs: Interpretive signage highlighting local history, landmarks, and heritage sites along walking trails and heritage routes o Art/Mural and Art Walk Signs: Informational signage and self-guided tour markers guiding visitors through public art installations, murals, cultural routes, and Art Walk experiences o Distance and time-to-destination information o Connections to transit, parking, and districts o Park and open-space identification CI. Unified Mapping System o A single, authoritative, high-quality base map for print, signage, web, and mobile use o Regular update protocol for new destinations and amenities o Open-data compatible for use by institutions, businesses, and tourism partners o Integration with modern mapping platforms and APIs CII. Digital & Mobile Integration o Web-based interactive map embedded on city and partner websites o Mobile-friendly, GPS-enabled wayfinding o Real-time content feeds (events, parking availability, transit, etc.) CIII. Regulatory, Temporary & Event Signage Guidelines o Standardized templates for city-produced regulatory signs. Adhere to the city's curbside style guidelines o Banner and temporary event signage standards o Institutional co-branding guidelines
