https://plainsman.com/2026/02/25/city-approves-proposal-for-memorial-ball-park-construction/ City approves proposal for Memorial Ball Park construction HURON – On a night that city engineer Brett Runge noted had a number of bids and quotes to approve, one that affects the future of Memorial Baseball Park was unanimously approved by the Huron City Commission at Monday evening’s meeting at City Hall. Runge reported that the city received two proposals in response to an advertised request for proposals. After review, the proposal submitted by Picek Construction of Huron was awarded the project, not to exceed a total cost of $1,200,000. Upon questioning from commissioners, Runge explained that the $1.2 million was the total project cost. The city has budgeted $1.05 million of that cost, and outside entities are responsible for the remaining $150,000 as well as the equipment within the facility once construction is complete. The meeting opened with Mayor Mark Robish calling forward the Huron Pee Wee B state champion hockey team. Huron hosted the state tournament over the weekend, and the Huron team pulled off a win in the championship game. They proudly displayed their trophy for the gathered crowd. Commissioner Rich Bragg reminded Huron residents that petitions are now available to run for local office. The city commission, county commission, and Huron school board will all have openings on the June 2 ballot. Petitions can be picked up at the main city office and turned in there as well. The deadline to turn in candidate petitions is March 24. On that note, Commissioner Bryan Smith took the opportunity to announce that he will not run for re-election to the commission after 12 years of service. The commission approved a bid for 2026 street milling and overlay by Asphalt Paving and Materials Co. in the amount of 1,289,517.40. They also approved quotes from Kay Contracting Inc. for manhole spray lining for $95,000 of work, a quote of $9,400 from RDO Equipment for an asphalt float for the street department, a quote from Lamb Chevrolet through state bid for $46,642 for a one-ton truck for the traffic department, and a quote of $90,205.44 from Global Specialty Contractors for Splash Central pool finishes repair. Runge presented a maintenance and encroachment agreement with the State of South Dakota Department of Transportation for upcoming work on SD Highway 37 (Dakota Ave.) from 9th St. S. to 21st St. S. Currently, the plan is to start that work in 2027. This was approved. A lot in the Broadland Creed residential subdivision was reclaimed by Greater Huron Development Corporation after the original purchasers did not build on the lot within 36 months of purchase. A quit claim deed and certificate of real estate value was approved to transfer the property to the city of Huron. The commission approved the solid waste recruitment and transition plan to hire an assistant supervisor, update the solid waste supervisor job description and to reclassify solid waste maintenance positions as solid waste operator positions. Commissioners also: Acknowledged that Patrol Sergeant Cole Long has completed the Field Training Officer Course requirements to make him eligible for a trainer wage increase. Acknowledged that part-time year-round library clerk Rhonda Yates has completed her probationary period. Approved the raffle permit filed by Alvin Schnathorst for the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a drawing date of April 30. Approved the raffle permit filed by the Huron Elks for a raffle on April 18. Approved a plat filed by Raymond and Diana Glanzer. Approved rate corrections for solid waste three- and four-yard containers. The commission finished with a discussion about the approval during Monday’s TIF board of a new TIF for High Plains Premium Beef. A plan was approved that the organization will need to have ready for the March 11 planning meeting. If it is approved at that meeting, the TIF will move forward to the city commission meeting on March 16. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ The City of Huron is requesting proposals from design build firms or joint ventures to design and construct a baseball building at the entrance of the Memorial Baseball Park in Huron, South Dakota. *The value for this project is based on a financial range of $1,050,000 - $1,200,000.
