The purpose of this contract is to conduct broadleaf free growing surveys on approximately 650 hectares of BCTS cut-blocks west of Highway 97 and north of Highway 16 around Saxton Lake and surrounding areas. These blocks are within the Interior Broadleaf Working Group (IBWG) study area. There are 3,158 ha of broadleaf (= 75% broadleaf) and 4,903 ha of mixedwoods (25-75% broadleaf) in age class 5 within the study area (THLB and non-THLB). Currently, there is insufficient broadleaf or mixedwood area in age class 1 to replace age class 5 broadleaves, and existing age class 1 broadleaf and mixedwood stands may not mature into age class 5 broadleaf or mixedwood stands as recent modelling suggests natural succession may result in a conifer leading stand.
