Site work for a civil project in Denny Island, British Columbia. Completed plans call for site work for a road / highway; and bridge / tunnel.
Doc Creek is located at 51°57'39.8"N 127°39'59.1"W The Doc Creek Major Works project, located approximately 35 km southeast of Shearwater, BC. Access to this remote location is limited to boat and aircraft, requiring barging of all equipment and supplies. Road access to the start of work is on a rough road with drive time of approximately 2 hours from camp to back. The project primarily involves the deactivation of approximately 26km of road. This includes brushing, ditching, culvert and bridge maintenance, and signage. Road maintenance, if required is limited to the extent required to facilitate road deactivation activities. The contractor is responsible for maintaining roads to facilitate safe access. The scope of work encompasses several key activities. Road deactivation includes removing culverts and bridges, constructing cross-ditches and waterbars, pulling back unstable fill slopes, and re-vegetating disturbed areas. Specific bridge maintenance requirements, including repairs, replacements, and load rating updates, are detailed for several crossings. Bridge removals require environmental monitors and adherence to specific procedures for handling debris and waste. The contractor must supply various materials, including culverts, sediment fencing, and stream protection supplies, while the Province will provide grass seed and sediment matting. The project necessitates specialized equipment, including excavators, a crane or launch beam, and rock trucks. Work must be completed according to provided prescriptions, maps, stream crossing assessments, an environmental management plan, and terrain reports. Specific deactivation specifications cover log salvage, culvert and bridge removals, cross-ditch construction, and erosion control. Environmental considerations are paramount, especially regarding work near fish streams, invasive plant management, and petroleum product storage. The contractor must also adhere to fire safety regulations and maintain appropriate firefighting, and fall arrest equipment.
