Roadway and pathway improvements are required to better accommodate cyclists and pedestrians in an area currently congested with vehicle traffic. The work includes construction of a new paved bicycle path along the perimeter of the West Bluff Trailhead parking area, roadway improvements to Long Avenue to accommodate an uphill bicycle lane, and construction of a vehicle turnaround at the north/west terminus of the West Bluff Trailhead parking area to improve vehicle circulation and relieve traffic congestion. The construction magnitude is $1 Million - $5 Million. Approximately 1,100 linear feet of new bike path will be constructed adjacent to the trailhead parking area. Several small retaining walls will be built to provide adequate space for the path at the toe of the hillside. Existing light poles and electric vehicle charging stations will be relocated as necessary to accommodate the bike path improvements. Long Avenue, approximately 1,200 linear feet in length, currently consists of two travel lanes with no shoulders. Where sufficient roadway bench exists, the roadway will be widened to provide an uphill bike lane. Existing guardrails and chain-link fencing along the roadway shoulder will be replaced, and an historic masonry drainage ditch located along the shoulder will be reconstructed. The intersection of Long Avenue and Marine Drive, along with the adjacent plaza area behind the Warming Hut and neighboring buildings, will be reconstructed to accommodate the bike path, gated access for administrative vehicles, and pedestrian safety enhancements.
