The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) has approved a long-term infrastructure programme to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) into waterways across parts of Greater Boston, including Cambridge, Somerville and the Alewife Brook watershed. The plan relies on a combination of large storage tanks, partial sewer separation, wetlands and other infrastructure upgrades to reduce sewage discharges during typical storm years, while stopping short of full sewer separation. The programme is intended to address public health and environmental impacts associated with untreated wastewater releases during heavy rain events. According to MWRA planning documents, the approved programme carries a total estimated cost of approximately $1.28 billion, to be shared between MWRA, the cities of Cambridge and Somerville, and ultimately ratepayers. The authority will submit the updated plan to state and federal regulators, followed by a public comment period, with a final plan anticipated in January 2027.
