South Carolina lawmakers are advancing plans for a long-term expansion and redevelopment of the State House capitol complex in downtown Columbia. The initiative would begin with a $5 million state-funded feasibility study in the proposed FY 2026–2027 budget and could ultimately involve demolition of multiple existing office buildings on the State House grounds and construction of up to two large replacement office structures, along with associated facilities and parking upgrades. The project is being coordinated by the S.C. Department of Administration in partnership with the S.C. Retirement System Investment Commission and is expected to unfold over at least a decade, with total public investment potentially reaching into the billions of dollars.
