Maintenance dredging is required for federally authorized navigation channels within Wilmington Harbor, including the Anchorage Basin and Mid River Channels. The work consists of removal and disposal of shoaled material that has accumulated since the last dredging operations. For the Wilmington Harbor upper reaches and Anchorage Basin, approximately 1.0 to 1.5 million cubic yards of material will be mechanically dredged from channel and berth areas to authorized depths of 38 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth, and 42 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth within the Anchorage Basin. Dredged material will be transported by barge and disposed of at the Government-furnished Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site, with strict requirements prohibiting overflow of barges or scows during dredging and transport. The Mid River Channels portion includes maintenance dredging from Upper Brunswick to Baldhead-Caswell, with an estimated quantity of 400,000 to 800,000 cubic yards. Authorized dredging depths are 42 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth for most reaches, and 44 feet plus 2 feet of allowable overdepth for the Battery Island, Southport, and Baldhead-Caswell reaches. All dredging shall be performed using a mechanical dredge and ocean-certified barges, with disposal at the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site.
