Renovation of a military facility in Mc Grath, Alaska. Working plans call for the renovation of a military facility.
The work consists of a Removal Action at Building 101 to excavate, manage, and dispose of up to 800 tons of petroleum-contaminated soil with concentrations exceeding applicable cleanup criteria. Petroleum-impacted soils are generally encountered at depths of 4 to 8 feet below ground surface, with impacts extending to the surface and as deep as 10 feet in some areas. Groundwater is present at approximately 5 to 6 feet below ground surface, requiring the contractor to actively manage soil moisture and prevent the accumulation of free water in excavation areas or waste disposal containers. The scope includes excavation in an active area with multiple existing utilities, including telephone and power lines along excavation margins, fiber optic lines crossing the northern portion of the excavation area, and additional utilities within the general vicinity. A roughly 6,500-square-foot laydown and pad area must be excavated to access contaminated soils and fully restored upon completion. Semi-mobile trailers with temporary utility connections located on the pad must be removed prior to excavation and reinstalled after site restoration. All work must be completed during July and August 2026 to coincide with seasonal low groundwater conditions and in accordance with applicable environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements.
