Description: The City of Olympia plans to preserve and relocate the Yashiro Japanese Garden following its closure on June 1, 2026, due to the sale of the Lee Creighton Justice Center property at 1010 Plum Street SE to the Squaxin Island Tribe. The project includes careful removal and storage of garden elements such as a granite pagoda, stone sculptures gifted by Olympia’s sister city of Kato, select plantings suitable for transplanting, and relocation of koi. The city will issue a request for qualifications for a landscape design firm with expertise in authentic Japanese garden design to lead public engagement, identify a new site, and develop a future garden concept. Funding of $350,000 has been set aside for planning, design, and preservation, with construction costs to be determined after site selection and design.
