Site work and renovation of a mixed-use development in Grise Fiord, Nunavut. Completed plans call for the renovation of a power facility; and for site work for a power facility.
Grise Fiord is getting a new Water Treatment Plant (WTP) with anticipated total completion in 2027. The new WTP will be located on the west side of the power plant and as per the QEC distribution mapping, and it will be fed through the existing distribution feeder 1 going east towards town. However, the current load carrying capacity of existing primary Feeder 1 is 225 kVA (3 x 75 kVA, 600/2400V) substation step up transformer bank. Therefore, with the addition of WTP's 172.1 kVA load, there is need to upgrade the existing substation bank to 3 x 167 kVA (600/2400V) bank to avoid feeder overloading and unplanned outages due to WTP load. Objectives and outcomes include installation of QEC provided 3 x 167KVA pole mounted transformer bank on Feeder 1, along with upgrade underground cable from the power plant switchgear unit to the transformer bank of Feeder 1; as well as upgrade the cut-out fuses, transformer low voltage (LV) down lead, overhead LV bus, 15KV, 300A solid blade cutout, and fuses of 27KV disconnect switch to be upsized to account for increased ampacity of new transformer bank, as per Schedule A, Appendix B – Stantec Memo dated June 2, 2026 Grise Fiord Feeder 1 upgrade.
