The Conditions Assessment findings showed $10,000,000 worth of equipment that is beyond its useful life. The building is empty, and each year the demo costs go up. The County Board did not fund the abatement in 2024 and instructed leadership to research the ability to market it to be repurposed to the best use. We received one offer to purchase, but as the County Board did not accept the offer, a decision was made to move forward with demolition. The 2026 County Administrator recommended budget included $1.3 million for hazardous material abatement in 2026, but the County Board deferred the abatement during budget adoption. Therefore, we are now requesting abatement in 2027 and demolition in 2028. This aligns with the Strategic Plan goal of Infrastructure & Environmental Sustainability because the county currently has a cost to maintain the building each year, and due to the financial impacts of renovating, the best option would be to demo and keep the land for future investments. The project is included in the city 2027 - 2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
