The King County Library System (KCLS) is one of the busiest library systems in the country, serving 1.2 million residents through 48 staffed community libraries, an institutional library (Judge Patricia H. Clark Children and Family Justice Center) and 17 mobile service vehicles. The KCLS service area encompasses 2,100 square miles of rural, suburban, and urban King County surrounding, but not including the City of Seattle, serving 36 municipalities and 18 school districts. KCLS employs over 900 full-time and part-time staff, and circulates over 21 million print, media, and electronic items each year. Established in 1942, per RCW 27.12.040 KCLS is a special purpose taxing district that is governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees and operates under the constitution and laws of the State of Washington.
