Replacement of the pavement at the fuel facility. The project includes: Pavement Removal Remove approximately 1,860 square yards of existing Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavement at the fuel facility. Existing HMA pavement thickness is approximately 3 inches. Remove approximately 100 square yards of 8-inch concrete pavement at the south garage door. Excavation and Aggregate Removal o Remove approximately: 8 inches of existing gravel base (Fuel Facility) The existing gravel base material can be disposed of at the Newaygo County Road Commission 2 inches of subbase material (Fuel Facility) The existing subbase material can be disposed of at the Newaygo County Road Commission. Excavate and grade for MDOT B2 curb and gutter placement. Aggregate Base Installation o Furnish and place 5 inches of aggregate base course MDOT 21AA compacted to 95% of the maximum density. Concrete Pavement (Fuel Facility and South Garage Door) Materials o Concrete pavement shall be 8 inches thick. . o Concrete shall be air entrained and designed for exterior pavement applications. Minimum compressive strength shall be 4,500 psi at 28 days. Slump, air content, and mix design shall meet MDOT requirements for concrete pavement. Reinforcement Pavement shall be reinforced with 6x6 W2.9 x W2.9 welded wire reinforcement (WWR), placed at mid-depth of the slab. Reinforcement shall be supported on approved chairs and secured to prevent displacement during concrete placement. Reinforcement shall not be used in lieu of required contraction or expansion joints. All laps shall be a minimum of one full mesh plus 2 inches unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer. Alternate reinforcement systems may be submitted for approval prior to bidding. Joints Contraction Joints Transverse contraction joints shall be placed at 15-foot maximum spacing.Joints shall be saw cut to a depth of one-quarter (1/4) of the pavement thickness, or 2 inches minimum. Saw cutting shall begin as soon as the concrete has sufficiently hardened to prevent raveling. Longitudinal Joints Longitudinal joints shall be installed where pavement widths exceed 15 feet. Expansion/Isolation Joints Pre-molded 1/2-inch expansion joint material shall be installed: At buildings and structures. Around fuel island foundations and equipment pads. At connections to existing concrete pavement. At intervals not exceeding 150 feet, where directed by the Engineer. Construction Joint Construction joints shall be installed whenever concrete placement is interrupted for more than 30 minutes or at the end of a placement day. Finishing and Curing Surface finish shall be machine or hand broom finish perpendicular to the direction of travel. Cure concrete immediately after finishing using an approved curing compound meeting MDOT requirements. Concrete shall be protected from traffic until minimum opening strengths are achieved. Tolerances Pavement thickness shall not vary more than +- 1 /4 inch from specified thickness. Finished surface shall not vary more than 1/4 inch in 10 feet when checked with a straightedge. Curb and Gutter Furnish and install approximately 220 linear feet of MDOT B2 Curb and Gutter as shown on plans
