The construction of an outdoor classroom on the Castlegar campus of Selkirk College is to be located at 301 Frank Beinder Way, Castlegar, BC V1N 4L3. Question Deadline 11/10/2026 The Outdoor Classroom will support the College's goal of using campus infrastructure, lands, and operations as a living laboratory. The project will prioritize passive weather protection, daylight, efficient LED lighting and controls, accessible circulation, responsible materials, and a compact construction approach. Materials would be evaluated for exposure resistance, repairability, toxicity, embodied carbon, availability, and end -of-life potential . The Outdoor Classroom will be designed and constructed on the Castlegar Campus, east of the main campus building and will include covered seating for up to 40 students, a covered instructor area, a whiteboard or similar weatherproof teaching surface, lighting, and power. The College does not intend the Outdoor Classroom to be over-designed. It is proposed to deliver a straightforward, durable and cost-conscious solution that could possibly be constructed by the local market. Materiality is kept simple with the use of mass timber elements, steel and concrete.
