Maintenance dredging of three portions of the authorized 27-foot deep, 500-foot wide Federal Navigation Project in the lower Kennebec River to support U.S. Navy navigational requirements associated with newly constructed surface combatants built and tested at Bath Iron Works. The work consists of dredging approximately 80,000 cubic yards of clean sand, including approximately 30,000 cubic yards of required material and 50,000 cubic yards of overdepth material. Approximately 61,000 cubic yards will be dredged from the Doubling Point area, approximately 10,000 cubic yards from the Popham Beach area at the river mouth, and approximately 9,000 cubic yards from the Bath Reach area located below the Carlton Bridge and adjacent to Bath Iron Works. Maintenance dredging at Doubling Point includes removal of sand waves to an elevation of -32 feet MLLW plus 2 feet of overdepth to improve the durability of navigational depths. Material dredged from the Bath Reach and Doubling Point areas will be placed in a previously used in-river disposal area north of Bluff Head in water depths of approximately 45 to 90 feet. Material dredged from the Popham Beach area will be placed at the newly established Jackknife Ledge West Disposal Site in nearshore waters approximately 30 to 45 feet deep. All dredging and dredged material placement will be performed using a trailing suction hopper dredge and is expected to be completed within a 3- to 4-week construction period during the allowable work window from 1 December 2026 through 15 February 2027.
