Renovation of a mixed-use development in Alexandria, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for the renovation of a municipal facility; and parking garage.

The Market Square Plaza construction started in 1966 after the City of Alexandria acquired the full block of commercial structures located on Sharpship Alley adjacent to the City Hall south entrance and demolished the existing buildings. The plaza included the multi-story underground garage and the fountain. This project will resolve several conditions present at the Market Square Garage and Plaza, which if left unresolved will continue to deteriorate and become safety issues. The conditions identified are: structural issues at the garage, water leakage at the fountain, drainage issues causing water infiltrations at the garage stairs, electrical malfunctions of the plaza lighting, and identified improvements to the plaza stairs and pavers. The project is included in the city's 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of July 5, 2022, information regarding a design firm and the general contractor selection timeline has not been disclosed. Although a firm timeline for construction has not been determined, construction is not expected to start prior to fiscal year 2024. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
