Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is constructing a permanent flood control management system to better regulate water levels on both Lake Manitoba and Lake St. Martin. The Lake Manitoba and Lake St Martin Outlet Channel Project (Outlet Channels Project) involves the construction of the Lake Manitoba Outlet Channel (LMOC), Lake St. Martin Outlet Channel (LSMOC) and other components such as outside drains, a construction road, bridges, water control structures, a Manitoba Hydro distribution line, PR 239 realignment and municipal roads re-connections. The Outlet Channels Project continues to advance through the final stages of the environmental assessment process. Preliminary design of the Outlet Channels Project is complete and detailed design work is underway. Manitoba continues to plan for construction to begin pending receipt of provincial and federal environmental licences. Construction is anticipated to take three years to complete. Work on the Outlet Channels Project includes: - Approximately 22,000,000 m3 of earth moving - Construction of three bridges - Construction of two water control structures including: approximately 16,000 m3 of concrete, design supply and installation of gates, gate guides and hoist structures, and construction of ancillary buildings - Approximately 35 km of road construction - Supply and placement of riprap (approximately 700,000 t) - Supply and placement of crushed rock (approximately 1,400,000 t) A construction sequencing and contracting strategy has been prepared in which approximately 24 construction contracts are planned to undertake the construction phase.
