https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2024/09/18/harry-linda-fath-gift-springer-school-scholarships.html Also in 2018, the Faths pledged a lead gift of $50 million to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden's $150 million renovation, known as More Home to Roam. And Harry Fath pledged $50 million to the Lindner Center of Hope in 2017. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ https://www.bizjournals.com/dayton/news/2021/06/15/cincinnati-zoo-breaks-ground-on-50m-attraction-it.html June 15, 2021 The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, one of the largest tourism destinations in the region, just broke ground on its largest attraction to date. The Cincinnati Zoo on June 15 broke ground on the Elephant Trek, a $50 million, 5-acre habitat for the Zoo's elephants, which will be more than five times the size of its current home for the pachyderms. The Elephant Trek is slated to open to the public in 2024, a year ahead of schedule, due to the cancelation of a planned parking garage at the Zoo. The Elephant Trek will put visitors to the Zoo closer than ever before to the giant animals and is meant to house a multi-generational herd of between eight and 10 Asian elephants. When completed, it will be the biggest project the Zoo has ever undertaken. "When we made the commitment to having elephants, this was not a short-term commitment," Reba Dysart, the Zoo's vice president of development, told me. "Elephants will be around for multiple generations to come." The Elephant Trek will be anchored by a two-floor barn at its center, which will serve both as an indoor habitat and central gathering space for the elephants, but also a private event space that can be rented for company functions or weddings. The top floor of the space will have views both into the barn where the elephants can gather and out onto the habitat. The habitat also furthers the Zoo's goal of becoming New Zero by 2025, meaning it uses 100% renewable energy and produces less waste. The Elephant Trek will be home to solar panel arrays to generate electricity for the Zoo, as well as stormwater tanks underneath the habitat that will store 1 million gallons of water to be used throughout the Zoo. In addition, the Zoo has a plan to use an aerobic bio-digester to tackle 2 million pounds of solid waste the elephants produce every year, creating fertilizer that will be used in its own botanical garden as well as community and personal gardens throughout the city. The More Home to Roam campaign has raised $110 million of its $150 million goal, kicked off by a $50 million matching gift from real estate entrepreneurs Harry and Linda Fath. Most recently the Farmer Family Foundation contributed $5 million for the Elephant Barn, which will be named for the foundation. "We are the least-publicly funded zoo in the state of Ohio, and outside of a biennial state capital budget we don't receive any money for capital projects in general," Dysart said. "Any new project we do has to be funded privately, but luckily we live in a generous town." Dysart said that the Zoo has seen an outpouring of support for its campaign, almost entirely from the Greater Cincinnati region. There are the high-profile corporate sponsorships, like the Faths' donation or the contribution from the Farmer Family Foundation, but Dysart said that the Zoo has seen even unconventional donations, like from a young visitor to the Zoo's day camp who in lieu of presents at his birthday party asked all of the guests to contribute to the Zoo. The Zoo has also turned to some creative partnerships to bring in smaller dollar contributions, such as elephant-shaped bookends from Rookwood Pottery, Christmas ornaments and even a create-your-own bourbon program. There are some high-dollar opportunities as well, such as naming rights to the entire Elephant Trek habitat (commanding a $25 million price tag) or the rights to name individual pavilions and gardens within the habitat. "This is the biggest project and undertaking the Zoo has ever been a part of," Dysart said. The Zoo is among the largest attraction in southwest Ohio, with 2019 attendance of 1.75 million, according to Courier research. _________________________________________________________ Plans call for renovations and improvements to the Cincinnati Zoo, including improvements to existing habitats and waste-reduction upgrades to energy and water throughout the zoo. The main projects of the More Home to Roam campaign include: Roo Valley, expected to open in 2020 - Wildlife Canyon will be transformed to include a two-level activity course, 25 feet high in the treetops, that will accommodate visitors of all ages and abilities. Beneath the trees, guests will enjoy the 15,000-square-foot grassy kangaroo and wallabies walkabout. The little penguins will also get a new home complete with underwater viewing for guests. Beer Garden, expected to open in 2020 - A new multi-tiered seating area will be added behind the Watering Hole food and beer station where guests can relax and enjoy the view of Roo Valley. Entry Village, expected to open in 2020 - Construction of twelve new ticket windows and additional queuing space as well amenities such as more family style restrooms and more storage space for strollers and wheelchairs. Safe and Efficient Visitor Access, expected to open in 2023 - A new 1,800-car parking garage. Rhino Reserve, expected to open in 2023 - Redesigned of the existing Rhino Reserve to include multiple outdoor yards. Elephant Trek, expected to open in 2025 - Expansion of the existing elephant habitat and construction of a nature-based play area with water elements for kids. A firm timeline and phase schedule for the other portions of the project have not been established; however, construction for the entry village portion, Roo Valley, and Elephant Trek portions have started construction.
