Site work and new construction of an educational facility in Floris, Virginia. Conceptual plans call for the construction of a educational facility.

Silver Line Elementary School is a new-construction elementary school planned for the western Fairfax County corridor near the Innovation Center Metro Station — one of the most closely watched new-school projects in FCPS's capital pipeline. After years of appearing in successive CIP documents as "unfunded" or "beyond the five-year window," the project took a significant step forward in early 2026 when planning and design funding was included in the newly adopted FY 2027–2031 CIP, marking the first time the project has active funding attached to it. Construction on the Dunn Loring school is on track to begin in FY 2027, which is also when planning for the Silver Line school near the Innovation Center Metro station is proposed to start in the CIP. This places design work commencing in the FY 2027 window (beginning July 2026), with construction and a school opening realistically targeting FY 2032–2034 based on a typical 4–5 year design-through-construction cycle for a project of this complexity and the district's current sequencing. An earlier CIP draft had estimated design work beginning in 2031 FFXnow, so the newly adopted FY 2027–2031 CIP represents a meaningful acceleration of roughly 4 years off the previously published schedule. No architect or construction manager has been selected. With design funding now approved in the FY 2027–2031 CIP and planning scheduled to begin in FY 2027 (July 2026 onward), an architect RFQ is the next procurement event to watch for — likely to surface in the FCPS procurement system sometime in 2026. For context, comparable recent FCPS new elementary school projects have used firms such as Cooper Carry (Herndon ES renovation) and MTFA (Dranesville ES renovation), with Howard Shockey & Sons and similar regional contractors executing construction under design-bid-build delivery. Silver Line's transit-adjacent, multi-story urban form — up to five stories on a constrained mixed-use site — will likely require an architect with transit-oriented or urban school design experience. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the CIP often evolves based on funding availability and the project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
