The proposed route would span 100 miles, connecting Farmington to Gallup, and run along U.S. Route 491 and New Mexico State Road 37, including portions of Navajo Nation land. It’s a partnership between the New Mexico Department of Transportation, San Juan County, and the Navajo Nation. Estimated to cost over $1B. As of September 30, 2025, project is currently in the environmental study phase conducted under the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA). Initial design phase expected to be completed in early 2027.
