This work shall consist of the containment, collection, temporary storage, transportation and disposal of waste from non-lead paint removal projects. Waste requiring containment and control includes, but is not limited to, old paint, spent abrasives, corrosion products, mill scale, dirt, dust, grease, oil, and salts. The project involves repairing handrails on bridges, retaining walls, culverts and bicycle paths located at 3 locations throughout the City. This project consists of improving existing handrails in 3 locations that need maintenance, repair or replacement. The existing handrails are composed of various materials: steel, aluminum, chain link fence and wood; and they have various coatings applied: paint, powder coating, and galvanizing. The conditions of the handrails varied from Very Poor to Very Good. Very Good handrails tended to be galvanized or newly painted, while the Very Poor handrails exhibited extensive rusting and section loss throughout. Handrails rated as Fair had minor paint loss and rusting at localized areas due to the paint or powder coating starting to deteriorate. This work consists of removing, cleaning, repairing, repainting and reinstalling the existing handrail as determined by the Engineer. New rail post anchoring hardware, as necessary, shall be required at each post location, and as directed by the Engineer. The work shall conform to the applicable portions of Sections 506 and 509 of the IDOT Standard Specifications, and as directed by the Engineer. Construction Requirements. Remove existing handrail from the present location and store in a secure area. This removal shall be accomplished in a manner that will avoid scratching, denting or other damage that may affect the durability or appearance of the handrail. Any handrail damaged by the removal operations shall be replaced in-kind by the Contractor at no additional cost.
