The Woodstock Dam, located on Little Stoney Creek, is slated for removal in a multi-year project to restore the creek’s ecological balance and address safety concerns. The removal aims to restore Little Stoney Creek’s natural flow, revitalize the ecosystem and benefit native fish species. The removal will allow nearly 10 miles of the creek to flow freely and connect with other parts of the water system. Even with the dam slated for removal, the project expected to take several years. The town looks to start the process within two to three years, but funding is needed and the completion of detailed studies. The project is listed as part of Woodstock’s Capital Improvement Plan for fiscal years 2025 and 2026. The town has requested funds through the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s High Hazard Potential Dam grant program, with staff hopeful for a response by the end of the year. Once the Forest Service has granted permission to remove the dam, final plans still need approval. Project is in the Capital Improvement Plan for city FY2025-2029. As of April 24, 2025, per owner, this project has yet to move forward and they have no specifics to share about a design firm or contractor.
