The Project consists of the removal and replacement of approximately 2268 square meters of original concrete precast panels and associated infrastructure on the north and south facades, and the installation of a grid tied vertical photovoltaic (PV) array on the south side. This new cladding will create a higher performance building envelope, aligned with current codes and regulations, while respecting the architectural heritage of the building and adjacent structures. In addition, the project may include the replacement of the main switch gear so as to accept power from the new PV array if an acceptable and cost effective way of connecting to the existing systems can’t be completed. The Social Sciences Building Facade Replacement will involve the following work: As a gateway building on campus with views from Crowchild Trail and the LRT station it must reflect the University of Calgary’s institutional aspirations and the modernist vocabulary of the original building. Incorporation of Photovoltaic (PV) technology to align with the University’s shortand long-term goals of sustainability and achieving a zero-carbon campus. Resolve existing envelope and pre-cast concrete panel failure, improving thermal performance and extending lifespan of building. The final design and PV panel incorporation should consider the long-term durability and ease of maintaining and operating. Meet funding spend deadlines, with substantial completion of construction in the fall of 2022, but with the structure and façade ready for fall semester in September.
