This project will fund the analysis of, and any design alternatives for, the discharge channel and abutments of Bear Creek Dam. Bear Creek is a 90-foot-high concrete arch dam that was constructed in in 1912 and raised in the early 1950s. The emergency spillway for the dam is an ogee crest with the discharge channel extending along the downstream face of the dam. A recent spillway analysis concluded that during the probable maximum flood event (PMF), the dam would be overtopped by approximately three feet. While overtopping will not cause extreme erosion of the concrete structure, erosion of the discharge channel is expected but it is unknown if this will compromise the dam. It is also unknown how much scour of the rock abutments will occur during the overtopping. As result, both a hydraulic and geotechnical analyses are needed to determine the extent of the erosion and scour that is likely to occur to the discharge channel and abutments. Once the extent of the erosion and scour is determined, measures to reinforce the spillway discharge channel, and possibly the abutments, will need to be designed.
