Renovation of an educational facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Completed plans call for the renovation of a educational facility.
The Work consists of various mechanical upgrades located within the Chemistry Complex. For clarity, the Chemistry Complex consists of the adjoining Chemistry East Building, Chemistry West Building and Chemistry Loading Dock located at the south end of Complex. Chemistry West Chemistry West has undergone an extensive renewal over the past 15 years including significant mechanical upgrades to the fume exhaust system, heat recovery, domestic water along with complete lab floor renewals that now cover approximately 75% of the building's usable floor space. The fume exhaust system was upgraded in a phased fashion that allowed new areas to utilize efficient VAV fume exhaust systems, while legacy floors remained with the original constant volume performance. Although the work to date has offered a valuable strategy to renew lab space while the building remains operational, some residual mechanical upgrades are still required to complete the entire system(s) overhaul and renewal. Scopes of Work include: .1 Array Air Fan Upgrade - Replace two (2) aging supply air fans located in the penthouse with new energy efficient fan array units that are fully integrated with the building systems. .2 Perimeter Heating Water Plant Upgrade - Replace aging water pumps and steam heat exchangers located in the basement with new energy efficient units that are fully integrated with the building systems. .3 Steam Station Replacement - Replace existing high to low pressure steam station in Room WB-33. Chemistry East In general, the Chemistry East Building remains a couple decades newer than Chemistry West but will require a similar infrastructure renewal strategy over the coming years to address modern high density laboratory requirements that include increased fume hood capacity supported by high efficiency VAV exhaust. Recent renovations to the building have initiated this approach on the south wing ONLY. The rooftop fume exhaust fans were replaced on the south wing with new fan array exhaust units and a heat recovery system in recent years. This system can now support VAV performance on select risers by use of existing booster fans on the risers. As a result, recent laboratory upgrades to six (6) teaching labs located on the main and second floor have started the conversion to fully VAV fume hoods. Scopes of Work include: .1 Exhaust Upgrade to North Wing - The design of the remaining fume exhaust system for the north wing is meant to create a single fully manifolded system for the entire building with VAV control. The mechanical design has been progressed to 90% complete but needs further revision to coordinate the related ductwork, electrical power design and structural support that can match the work completed on the south wing. Once complete, the newly integrated exhaust system would allow for future laboratory renewal with fully VAV retrofits to be configured in a vertical lab alignment (the risers are epistitial, vertical & asbestos) and could remain in service for the foreseeable future. .2 Steam Station Replacement - Replace existing high to low pressure steam station in Mechanical Room EB-22 and ES-60 All spaces that are impacted by the mechanical upgrade work are likely to contain hazardous materials and will be subject to a degree of abatement. It is important to review and assess each space to fully determine the extent.
