Currently sludge from the surface water treatment process is discharged to the onsite ponds. The sludge is dried by the evaporation of the water from the pond. Once dry, the sludge is removed from the ponds and hauled to a landfill for disposal. Since the drying ponds are open to the atmosphere the sludge does not completely dry and must be removed from the pond and storage adjacent to the pond to complete the drying process. This process leads to the ponds being overcapacity and sludge is sent to the City's wastewater treatment plant where it goes through the entire treatment process. The sludge has deleterious effects on the wastewater treatment process and increases the cost of dewatering and hauling the wastewater treatment plant sludge. The sludge press will eliminate the use of ponds for drying and the necessary diversion of sludge to the wastewater treatment plant. As of December 16, 2022, this project is currently in the FY 2023-2027 CIP . Funding for this project is allotted in the city's capital improvement plan for construction FY 2026. A firm timeline has not been established; however, construction is scheduled for Fiscal Year 2026. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
