As of July 14, 2023, an architect has been selected for the project. Bidding and construction is estimated to take place in 2025. *The closed solicitation has been included below for reference: Department of Transportation (DOT), Airports Division seeks the services of qualified architectural and/or engineering firms to provide design services for the "Terminal Improvements" project at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole, State Project No. AH2042-34. These services are anticipated to be immediately required, and the completion of design plans, specifications, cost estimates, and associated reports will be due within three hundred sixty-five (365) calendar days from the Notice to Proceed. In accordance with Section 3-122-136, HAR, the contract will be a Lump Sum contract, with an overall contract time of performance of four (4) years. The project scope includes improvements to the existing holdrooms to modernize and enhance the overall passenger experience at the airport. Improvements will include, but not be limited to, extending the roof lines at the holdroom "huts" to provide one continuous covered area for passengers to wait, enclosing and air conditioning the holdrooms for passenger comfort, modifications to the USDA screening layout at the holdrooms to relieve congestion, installing access control readers at the gates, and replacing the existing gate podiums. This project may also look at modernizing and expanding the existing ticket lobbies and baggage claims. Some areas may require hazardous material abatement, possibly involving lead and asbestos.
