Renovation of an office development in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Completed plans call for the renovation of a office development.
Investigate options to replace the existing 250 ton air cooled screw chiller (CH-2). The current chiller has failed and requires replacement in order to meet building cooling requirements. Preference to a modular chiller which would provide unit redundancy as each module can operate independently of the others. Should one module fail or is taken offline for maintenance, the rest can operate normally and the cooling system will still be functional. This is also an advantage for maintenance as it can be done during the cooling season and during normal working hours except on the rare occasions when the full capacity of the system is required. A modular chiller may also decrease the required refrigerant charge up and could minimize the amount of refrigerant loss due to a leak should one occur. This is due to the configuration of multiple refrigeration circuits, the amount of refrigerant that would be expelled by one circuit is therefore significantly less. Lastly, typically a modular chiller decreases the electrical demand due to the nature of the individual circuits. A modular chiller will also allow for the future planned GSHP system, and provide redundancy without under-utilizing a single larger compressor. Additional chiller options to be investigated including a variable speed magnetic bearing chiller. New chiller refrigerant should be selected knowing, that as per the Montreal Protocol, by 2030, no more HCFCs including R-22 and R-134a will be in production.
