Consolidation of Grand River Hospital and St. Mary's General Hospital. Scope to include: renovation and remodeling of Grand River main site for ambulatory and urgent care; expansion of rehabilitation services at Grand River - Freeport; and construction of a new joint-use building for acute care. The hospitals will continue to operate independently in shared space once the redevelopment and new build are complete. Preferred site is on University of Waterloo-owned lands: north of Columbia St, south of Bearinger Rd, and east of Westmount Road, near the David Johnson Research and Technology Park. TIMELINE: Plans are conceptual. A preferred site has been identified. The Ministry of Health approved the merger of the two hospitals into the Waterloo Regional Health Network (WRHN) April 2025. Owners are collaborating with the University of Waterloo to determine how the land will be developed. The Redevelopment Team has submitted the functional program to the Ministry of Health's Health Capital Investment Branch (HCIB) and are working towards approvals. RFP for Stage 2 design closed fall 2025; at this time, whether or not an awarded proponent has been selected is unreleased. Construction is not anticipated prior to 2029.
