As of August 15, 2025, this project is in the conceptual phase. The county is in the process of choosing a developer. There is no timeline for construction yet. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) intends to seek the services of a Developer for a Public Private Partnership (P3) for the development and implementation of I-77 South Express Lanes in Mecklenburg County (the Project). The Project is located in the Charlotte Metropolitan area and consists of widening eleven miles of I-77 in Mecklenburg County. The Project includes the addition of two express lanes in each direction (with shoulders) from the South Carolina State Line to I-277 (Belk Freeway)/NC 16 (Brookshire Freeway). There are thirteen interchanges, four grade separations (including one greenway crossing), and four railroad bridges on I-77 within the project limits. This notice provides information regarding the anticipated scope of work for the Project and NCDOTs anticipated plan for procurement of the Project. The publication of this notice does not constitute the start of any procurement process for the Project by NCDOT. No procurement process for the Project will commence unless and until NCDOT issues a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for the Project.
