The goal of this project is to collect and synthesize available information about the differences between the DLA of salt brine (mixed up to three different additives applied as recommended depending on the situation ) and the application of granular salt as reflected in various performance and safety metrics. Study results are expected to provide benefits to two target audiences: Within the transportation agency study results can be used to validate the findings of previous studies and current DLA program practices, encourage departmental buy-in and adoption of a more extensive salt brine / DLA program, and inform best practices of winter maintenance to operational staff. Externally study results can be used to inform the traveling public and others, providing data to support DLA practices and enhance the public's perception of this winter maintenance treatment. The method of contractor selection has not been determined at this time.
