The City of Owensboro is committed to improving the quality of life for Owensboro residents by providing a wide variety of leisure activities, facilities and services that encourage health, fitness, relaxation and learning; as well as providing opportunities for community involvement. The Parks & Recreation department focuses its time and energy on maintaining green space for future generations, providing recreation programs and facilities for improved quality of life for Owensboro residents and supporting the local economy through sports and recreation tourism. The plan should create a roadmap for ensuring just and fair quantity, proximity and connections to quality parks and green space, recreation facilities and programs throughout the community now and into the future. The community is seeking a system-wide approach in order to develop goals and priorities; as well as strategies based on current and future funding scenarios. The Parks & Recreation Master Plan that will be created from this work will be a guiding document for future development and redevelopment of the communitys system of parks and green space, recreation and programs over the next ten years. Owensboro is the fourth largest city by population in Kentucky. It is the county seat of Daviess County and is located on U.S. Route 60 about 32 miles (51 km) southeast of Evansville, Indiana, and is the principal city of the Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Citys population was 60,011 at the 2020 U.S. Census, with a metropolitan population of 103,312. The community is approximately 20 square miles with a population of 2,930 per square mile There are 25,414 households in our community with the median household income of $46,193. Twenty percent of our population lives in poverty.
