The Whatcom Conservation District (Wcd) is Requesting Proposals From Qualified Restoration Contractors for Site Preparation, Planting and Maintenance of Native Trees and Shrubs on the Whatcom County Property Along Homesteader Creek Near Acme, Wa. Direct any questions regarding the proposal to Project Manager Frank Corey, Whatcom Conservation District, 6975 Hannegan Rd, Lynden WA 98264m by telephone at (360) 526-2381 ext 131 or by email at fcorey@whatcomcd.org The main focus of this project is the restoration of functioning aquatic habitat in the South Fork Nooksack River watershed, in response to the site's resource concern of lack of aquatic habitat for fish and other organisms. Other notable resource concerns present include: compaction of soil, surface water depletion, groundwater depletion, sediment transported to surface water, elevated water temperature, plant productivity and health, plant structure and composition, and lack of terrestrial habitat for wildlife and invertebrates. This project aims to establish 200' or wider buffers in an effort to increase the residence time of water stored in the floodplain. Improving the floodplain's retention capacity will lessen the magnitude of a flooding event, mitigating negative flood impact to surrounding farmland/property. This will result in slower creek flow in the winter when flood risk is high and higher flow in the summer. Additionally, the established 200' forest buffer will increase the average volume of water present in the stream in the summer, extending the period of streamflow deeper into the dry summer months.
