Santa Cruz Water Department (SCWD) Beltz 12 Phase 1 Ammonia Removal Improvements Project The proposed Work is generally described as follows: Furnish and install a 21,875-gallon steel pressure vessel on a new concrete pad Install new 6" piping to connect pressure vessel to existing facility piping Relocate chlorine injection location on existing facility piping Beltz 12 is sited on a City-owned 0.65-acre parcel located near Research Park Drive south of Soquel Drive in the unincorporated portion of Santa Cruz County. This facility was constructed in 2015 and includes a municipal water well and a water treatment plant consisting of an iron and manganese removal pressure filter vessel, two reclaim tanks, a control building housing a chlorine disinfection system and various pipes, appurtenances, and site improvements. Beltz 12 is an important component in the strategy to shift groundwater pumping inland from the City's three Live Oak area wells, Beltz Wells 8, 9, and 10. Only operated during the summer, groundwater contributes up to 5% of the City's water supply during the dry season when flowing sources are diminishing. The Beltz 12 Phase I Ammonia Removal Improvements Project will install a new contact tank, piping, and modify the chlorine injection system to allow the facility to treat higher ammonia concentrations and restore the reliable operation of the treatment plant throughout the dry season. Installed horizontally on a new concrete pad, the new tank is a 41-foot long by 10-foot diameter steel pressure vessel. All improvements will be contained within the existing fenced site.
